Thanks E!

Resources for Eco-Awareness and Action
E/The Environmental Magazine - Norwalk,CT,USA
The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Green Living by Trish Riley (Alpha, $16.95) helps readers do just that, with a topic-by-topic breakdown that details the big ...

GET WITH THE PROGRAM

No matter how many green guides and books of green tips hit the market, the message bears repeating: we need to cut down on our consumption. The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Green Living by Trish Riley (Alpha, $16.95) helps readers do just that, with a topic-by-topic breakdown that details the big picture issues (like global warming) complete with helpful science definitions in the margins, to saving energy at home, using alternative transportation and taking an “eco vacation.” Rather than just offer suggestions, Riley’s book acts as a primer on the major environmental issues of our time. She explains why even a part-time vegetarian diet is both a global warming issue and a personal one, and how planting more diverse crops in our backyard gardens can help ensure that plant species don’t die out. She mentions the cities that are leading conservation initiatives, such as Seattle, Washington and Huntsville, Alabama, and finds ways to include children in the environmental movement. It’s a way to start thinking about our daily habits so we can learn to not only curb our appetites for more, but to enjoy living with less. —Kelly N. I apply much of this knowledge in my life already. I have reduced our chemical exposures by using essential oils for cleaning and perfume, using organic foods and organic gardening and lawn care techniques. By moving to a smaller city, I've cut way back on my driving. I bring my own organic cotton bags to the grocery and I've installed CFL bulbs throughout my home. I don't use the AC unless I really have to and I prefer our tile floors over the off-gassing fake wood that was here when we moved in. I could go on and on, but my point is that there is still so much more that I can do to Go Green, and I know that everything I do will help move our planet forward by sending the message to industry and government that Green is the Way to Go. Today I am going to ratchet up my commitment and do even more in my own life to help move us toward a healthy future - I'm going to move from doing a little bit to doing as much as I can. It's a step-at-a-time process, and every step we each take will move us forward. Please join me in taking more steps than we've taken before. The messages about "living green" and protecting the environment are coming from everywhere now. Despite your best intentions, you might not know how to boost your eco-friendly status.

Trish Riley, an environmental writer since 1992, is the author of "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Green Living: Earth-Saving Solutions for Every Part of Your Life."

Riley attributes the current green-living craze to Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth," his Oscar-winning documentary on global warming.

But she added that it was only a matter of time. To read the rest of the article...

Happy Spring!

Rachel and I stopped by our local Borders yesterday and we found our book in pretty good company on the shelf! I love the way she cuts to the chase regarding our buying habits, how they developed (by the clever design of economists with the intent of making money, of course) and how they are perpetuated by business and even our government ("What was our president's response to 9/11? President Bush didn't tell us to pray or meditate, but to SHOP!"). Annie shows us how we have been taken advantage of for the sake of the almighty dollar. Now it's up to us to untangle that hold on our lives and to kiss The Economy goodbye. Will the sky fall, as the newspapers seem to tell us? No. We might get our lives back, along with time to nurture our children, explore our creativity, and to make the most of our opportunities for love. I vote we give this a try..... The topics cover going green at home with vehicles, in daily life, at work and in promoting socially responsible investment opportunities. The list of Web sites, addresses and other resources is encyclopedic. The book presents an abundance of simple strategies to get started, learn more and do more.

The author, Trish Riley, is an American environmental award-winning journalist.

http://rapidcityjournal.com/articles/2007/11/08/news/features/doc470d50ec4ef14124139429.txt

I'll come back with more travel news soon, but for the moment I want to share info about a cool event we've got going on this weekend. I'm busy packing up books and fliers and the v.cool poster that Alpha made for me (of the book cover), and I'm taking it all to South Florida for a fun book signing and talk at the new totally green restaurant, Pizza Fusion. Founders Michael Gordon and Vaughan Lazar have applied every green principle they could come up with to their fast-growing franchise business, and I am excited to see how well they're doing. They're using heat from the pizza ovens to warm their water, they serve organic and vegan food and drinks, and they deliver in hybrid vehicles. They opened this headquarter store in Fort Lauderdale in February 2006 and already they've sold more than 50 franchises in seven states around the country - the world wants green businesses! I hope all my friends and everyone who's going green will join us at:

Pizza Fusion, 1013 N.
