GET WITH THE PROGRAM

No matter how many green guides and books of green tips hit the market, the message bears repeating: we need to cut down on our consumption. The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Green Living by Trish Riley (Alpha, $16.95) helps readers do just that, with a topic-by-topic breakdown that details the big picture issues (like global warming) complete with helpful science definitions in the margins, to saving energy at home, using alternative transportation and taking an “eco vacation.” Rather than just offer suggestions, Riley’s book acts as a primer on the major environmental issues of our time. She explains why even a part-time vegetarian diet is both a global warming issue and a personal one, and how planting more diverse crops in our backyard gardens can help ensure that plant species don’t die out. She mentions the cities that are leading conservation initiatives, such as Seattle, Washington and Huntsville, Alabama, and finds ways to include children in the environmental movement. It’s a way to start thinking about our daily habits so we can learn to not only curb our appetites for more, but to enjoy living with less. —Kelly N. Hughes

Green Festivals for Earth Day and Beyond!
I hope you've been having as much fun as I have during this exciting green season. I enjoyed the Green Apple Music Festival in Miami, then spoke about Going Green through your kitchen at the Heart of a Chef Festival in Miami the next weekend, and now I'm headed to Southern California to speak with Meeting Planners at the InterContinental Hotel Showcase events in San Diego and Los Angeles. GoGreen!

While I'm out west, I'm looking forward to a peek at the Grand Canyon with my son Bud, then to meeting Idealistgifts.com founder Amy Belanger in Phoenix. We think we might be of like minds and we're looking forward to finding out about that!

Enjoy your springtime and let us know how you're going greener every day. Try switching to a non-synthetic soap and shampoo for a truly healthy, clean feeling. You'll be amazed at how fresh it feels when you're not coating yourself with plastic and hormone disrupters in the shower every morning! Cheers!

Happy Earth Day!

Now is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to implement the things we've learned about Going Green! I have learned so much about our environmental dangers through my research for The Complete Idiot's Guide to Green Living and my other journalism work. I apply much of this knowledge in my life already. I have reduced our chemical exposures by using essential oils for cleaning and perfume, using organic foods and organic gardening and lawn care techniques. By moving to a smaller city, I've cut way back on my driving. I bring my own organic cotton bags to the grocery and I've installed CFL bulbs throughout my home. I don't use the AC unless I really have to and I prefer our tile floors over the off-gassing fake wood that was here when we moved in. I could go on and on, but my point is that there is still so much more that I can do to Go Green, and I know that everything I do will help move our planet forward by sending the message to industry and government that Green is the Way to Go. Today I am going to ratchet up my commitment and do even more in my own life to help move us toward a healthy future - I'm going to move from doing a little bit to doing as much as I can. It's a step-at-a-time process, and every step we each take will move us forward. Please join me in taking more steps than we've taken before. We'll get there.

HAPPY EARTH WEEK!
How will you be celebrating Earth Week and Earth Day (April 22)?

I will be speaking (just long enough to cheer on Miami Greenies!) to an estimated crowd of 20,000 at the Green Apple Music Festival in Miami this Sunday. The Green Apple Festival has been a huge Earth Day event in New York City, and has spread to other cities - this is the first year for Miami - making it eight cities in 2008 - the largest Earth Day festival ever, anywhere. Bill McKibben and Robert Kennedy Jr. will be speaking in NYC. Find the festival nearest you to join in the fun: www.greenapplemusicfestival.com

Take a moment to let others know your green intentions by signing onto the national Earth Day map at www.google.com/earthday08.

The Institute for Heart Math - where scientists have found strong ties between our thoughts, hearts, mind, brain, and physical and mental health - has developed a simple, short meditative exercise that helps us achieve a greater sense of peace and good health. They've created a beautiful video to walk us through the steps to generate good thoughts and good health for the Earth to celebrate Earth Day 2008. Join in! http://www.heartmath.org/million_hearts/

Not anymore. The messages about "living green" and protecting the environment are coming from everywhere now. Despite your best intentions, you might not know how to boost your eco-friendly status.

Trish Riley, an environmental writer since 1992, is the author of "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Green Living: Earth-Saving Solutions for Every Part of Your Life."

Riley attributes the current green-living craze to Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth," his Oscar-winning documentary on global warming.

But she added that it was only a matter of time. To read the rest of the article...
