Thanks for the Love from It's All Yoga!

It's All Yoga: Green Tip of the Month: Green Gift Ideas

Green Tip of the Month: Green Gift Ideas
Spread a little love for the planet along with your holiday cheer. Green gifts are often unique and more meaningful than run-of-the-mill purchases, and they're easier than ever to find.

Buy recycled, organic, fair-trade, and other environmentally friendly items like those on greatgreengoods.com and greenpages.org.

Give green experiences such as a certificate to an organic restaurant or a membership in a cycling club or car-share program (such as zipcar.com).

Make your activism gift-worthy by combining an inspiring book or DVD (get ideas here), a compact fluorescent bulb, and some organic treats in an attractive, reusable container (Gogreengift.com sells a prepackaged version).

Make your money do double duty by donating to a conservation organization in the recipient's name. Donations to the Sierra Club's Sponsor a Wild Place program help protect some of the planet's most spectacular wilderness areas, and comes with an adorable animal puppet or a useful backpack.

Miami Flooding - Cars Floating in the Streets

A sudden storm dumped seven to nine inches of rain, causing electrical outages and massive traffic jams in Miami. Meteorologist expect the stormy weather to return to South Florida on Saturday afternoon. - 10:08 AM ET

via MiamiHerald.com - Miami & Ft. Lauderdale News, Weather, Dolphins & More.

storms, which could pack hail and winds, are expected to follow similar paths of yesterday’s showers.

On Friday, afternoon downpours dumped more than nine inches over Miami Beach in only five hours, causing flooding, power outages and massive traffic jams during rush hour.

The South Florida storm hit at the height of Friday’s rush hour, accompanied with hail the size of ping pong balls, wicked lightning strikes, crashing thunder and winds topping 60 mph.

Just six months after a $500 million renovation, The Fontainebleau was left with an eight-foot hole in its lobby ceiling and ankle-deep water in its night club.

”We love Miami,” said displacd guest Mark Pavlat. “This was just a freak of nature.”

Really, Mark? This looks an awful lot like the projections of extreme weather brought on by global warming to me. That is no freak of nature - it’s a consequence of burning fossil fuels.

A few things I enjoyed at Green Cities Florida

I must say...Green Cities™ Florida was really cool. I browsed the showcase filled with green organizations. I met some really interesting people like Trish Riley, a journalist and author of the popular book "The Idiots Guide to Green Living". I listened to a few speakers and had a few favorites, one being Marci Zaroff. She was interesting to me because she was into organic fashion. Read more

Ecological Footprint Quiz

Redefining Progress and the Center for Sustainable Economy have created an ecological footprint calculator to measure individual and business impact on carbon, food, housing, and goods and services, and indicates how many global acres of cropland, pastureland, marine fisheries, and forests are impacted. The quiz is available in five languages, has footprint data for 147 countries and won an Outstanding Achievement Award from Interactive Media Awards. Check it out:

The National Mall is going green - finding ways to recycles tons of trash! Coca-Cola kicked in $1 million to start the program, a pilot for the National Park Service that may spread to parks across the country. Fox News has the story: National Mall Gets Set to Go Green.

So cool to see big biz and fair news getting on board! :) t*

Rooftop Farm in Brooklyn Overlooking Manhattan Skyscrapers

Neighbors have joined together to create a farm full of vegetables towering over Brooklyn. Pitching in their compost and labor, the team expects to harvest more than enough for their own needs, and will sell excess to local restaurants, delivered by bike. Check out this inspiring story and consider whether there might be a roof in your urban community that would benefit from the added insulation of going green!

I had the great honor to speak at Co-Op America's (now Green America!) Green Business Conference in San Francisco on November 12, just a few days after the election of Barack Obama to the Presidency of the United States. I have high hopes for the future of our green businesses, and my message of hope resonated loudly among the audience of green business owners. Our day has come. My presentation is posted here.
